Abstract

The subject of data base semantics is considered under a data type approach, using P. Chen's Entity Relationship model as a framework. In this context, three data type constructors are used to derive complex data types in the model: sum, product and correspondence.

It is shown how these constructors can be used to produce semantically relevant abstractions.

In turn, these abstractions impose rules on the behavior of the data base. Two kinds of such rules are distinguished: existence constraints and operational constraints. The interactions among these two kinds of constraints are also investigated in the paper.
