Abstract

The logical database design generally consists of two stages: designing the conceptual schema, and translating it into an object data model acceptable by the underlying database system. In this report, the entity-relationship model is used to describe the conceptual schema, and the translation process from the entity-relationship model to the hierarchical model is proposed. In the construction of the hierarchical model, the dependency structures which represent the inherent hierarchical properties of information are analyzed. The query characteristics are also investigated and formulated in the form of the access weight matrix.
