Abstract

Summary-Table-by-Example (STBE) is a graphical language suitable for statistical database applications. STBE queries have a hierarchical subquery structure and manipulate relations with set-valued attributes and summary-tables. The hierarchical structure of queries in STBE naturally implies a tuple-by-tuple query evaluation strategy which may not be optimum. This paper describes an algorithmic approach to transform any STBE query into a relational algebra expression that utilizes an extended set of operators.
