Abstract
OLAP applications make heavy use of aggregation and yet need to be interactive.
Query performance is thus crucial for OLAP applications.
In this paper, we identify the impedance mismatch between the "data cube" data model exported by OLAP engines and the underlying relational data-storage interface as being key to understanding OLAP performance.
Bridging this mismatch efficiently is essential and in this context we survey some of the recent results in this area.
Further, as the volume of data and the number of data sources keeps increasing OLAP will have to evolve.
In particular, we discuss approximate querying and the effect of the Internet on OLAP.
